DIY Donut Bouquet

Oh hey there! Did you know National Donut Day is next week? Yep, I’m the nerd that knows. I blame it on blogging for many years… and I usually I miss it. I’ve never been a huge donut fan, but Kevin is, and I love that he takes Anabelle on a little Daddy daughter date to go get them! We each have our specialties and mine tends to be on the crafty activity end. So I decided to come up with a craft that she’d love!

I tried to look for an easy kid donut craft and aside from just cutting up felt or a paper plate, there wasn’t really anything, so I wandered around the craft store and got creative. I had to do the prep and the final touches, but the crafty steps in the middle, I totally left up to Anabelle! She absolutely loved painting, I didn’t help at all because I didn’t want to take away the fun she was having!

What you need:

styrofoam, modge podge, paint, felt, “sprinkles”, glue gun, kabob sticks

Notes: I found these styrofoam circles in the plant section at the craft store. I made the sprinkles from necklace bands in the jewelry section.

Directions:

Craft prep:

This step should be done the day before actual craft time. I looked for anything that would resemble a donut and I kid you not, I found nothing. I only found circular styrofoam pads that I figured I could easily cut out the center.

1. Cut a hole in center of the styrofoam circle.

2. Cover the styrofoam in modge podge. I used a paper plate and dipped both sides of the donut in the modge podge. Then I used a foam brush to scrape off the excess and paint the outside edge. This step seals the styrofoam making it easier to paint.

3. Allow to dry overnight.

Craft time:

These steps, depending on how old your kiddo is, are so much fun for your kiddo!

4. Paint the donuts!

5. Trace the donuts onto felt and then cut out the icing. I did this by cutting a squiggly line within the donut tracing.

Finishing touches:

6. Use a hot glue gun to secure the felt onto the donut. (I did try this first with modge podge in an effort to get Anabelle to continue helping me with craft time, but the felt soaked in so much much modge podge, took forever to dry, and I didn’t like the finishing texture.)

7. Use a hot glue gun to glue on the sprinkles.

8. Stab the Kabob stick into the donut.

9. I took a flower vase and some extra Easter grass for the bouquet!

And that’s it! They would even make fun toys for our toy kitchen if we didn’t have Betty in the stage where everything goes into her mouth!!! Although, I would then substitute mini felt rectangles for the sprinkles to eliminate the possibility of the sprinkles falling off. But for now, it’s our centerpiece for our dining room table!
