Here’s the very first DIY post on Mr Printables blog. It’s a very simple project, something for a lazy day.
I always liked the look of glycerine soaps. By cutting them up in faceted shapes, you can easily make fun and pretty soaps that look like huge gem stones.
Make them for kids or with kids, they’d be great for a guest bathroom or as party favors and decorations for a mermaid party.
This post shows how to turn shop bought glycerine soaps into gem stone shapes as a quick project, but doesn’t show you how to make glycerine soaps from scratch. Just so you know!
How to make the glycerine soap gem stones
Firstly, get hold of some pretty colored glycerine soaps. I bought some from muji and ebay. I would’ve liked an even more colorful selection. Orange ones are the most common.
Cut each one into a few chunks. You can use a fruit knife or any other small kitchen knives, a thin blade works best. The glycerine soaps from ebay were very soft and cut like cheese. This type will be good for kids to try cutting even with a butter knife. The ones from muji were harder to cut, but not especially difficult. You can also use sharp cutters (grown ups) to have clean and polished looking cut surfaces.
Now, start sculpting each chunk. I started by cutting off the big corners then kept cutting more corners until I liked the shape.
Just keep cutting off corners in different angles and you’ll easily end up with nice faceted shapes.
They look specially pretty when the light shines through them. I’m thinking of threading them with string to hang by the sunny bathroom window.
You could make a small pile of them over LED fairy lights.
Or maybe in a clear glass bowl with small light bulbs behind it?
Now the left overs.
They look pretty and perfectly good for use. Put them in a bowl and use all the last bits.
I liked how they looked, so here are many pointless photos of them.
