DIY Studded Zipper Pouch

With a degree in fashion design, I will always have a place in my heart for fashion and accessories. Although I’ve moved into creating decor for weddings and parties, I love a good DIY that I can use on a night out, or any outing at that. My weakness is definitely small colorful pouches that help keep me organized. I have a little collection that I use for random things like mints, pens, business cards and lip gloss. My favorite part is that you can take one out and use it as a mini clutch if needed, carrying only your necessary items.

The trend of spikes and studs always had me looking for a “girly-er” version. So I had the idea of keeping the spikes and coating them with candy inspired colors (did I mention I really like candy too? no? I do…). I loved that it still had a bit of edge, but with the feminine touch I needed.

Here is what you will need to make your own ombre studded zipper pouch…

Supplies: 4 colors of spray paint, 1/4 yard of vinyl, zipper, 80-100 studs (I purchased mine here), and a sewing machine.

Arrange your studs how you would like them and about how far you’d like them apart. I did 10 columns and 8 rows about 3/4″ apart. Divide them into 4 sections. I used straws so I could see how large each section was. Then separate your studs into 4 different spaces for painting.

Paint the lowest left corner in your lightest color and the highest right corner your darkest creating a slight ombre effect.

Now create the pouch your studs will go on. On the inside of the fabric find the center (where your bottom fold will be) and create a grid on the top half using the measurements you made above. At each intersection of a line, you will poke a hole for the studs to be attached. After all of your holes are made, cut down each side to the width (plus seam allowance) you want your final pouch to be. Remember that the width must be the same or smaller than the zipper length you have. If you have a coil (plastic) zipper, you can always sew right over and make it shorter.

Next, sew in the zipper to the opening of the pouch. Place the zipper face down on the front side of the pouch as seen in the first image. Sew along the edge, then flip the zipper to the inside (hiding edges on the inside of the pouch) and create and edge stitch as seen in the 3rd and 4th image. This edge stitch will keep the vinyl from curling up and over the zipper. Do the same with the other side of the zipper onto the opposite side of the pouch (attaching the other side of the zipper to the “back” side with no studs). Once you have done all of this, your zipper should be attached to the top of both sides of the pouch leaving only the sides open. Next, sew up the sides. Sew one, open the zipper (so you can turn it right side out!) and then sew the other.

Now insert the back screw side of your studs from the side of the pouch, to the outside.

Screw on the tops that have dried, and you’re are done!

This is the perfect accessory for lazy Sunday breakfasts at your local cafe. Drop in your phone, some cash, some colorful pens and your sketch book. Spend the morning enjoying coffee or tee and admiring your creation!
