Another removable wallpaper project today! I am so in love with that wallpaper – it seriously all over my house now
A couple months back I bought a lot of stepping stools at IKEA – hubby and I were on a mission to make the house as practical for the girls as possible before the arrival of their baby sister Freia. The more they could do on their own, the better for us (see the constellation reward chart I made to help with that). I put a stool in their bedroom so they could reach the top of their closet, another to catch the books in the little library I put up in the nursery, another one in the kitchen… and one in my bedroom as a much needed side table. We literally live in Stool-land But these stepping stools are only $14.99 and we get so much use out of them – how could I resist?!
I had a bunch of leftover removable wallpaper from when I wallpapered our living room and entrance (see post here), and from when I did the giant wall stickers for the girls’s bedroom, and I thought, “why not use those scraps and had a touch of fun to these stools that have taken over our life?!”! Seriously the easiest DIY project, and they pack up our home with color and fun. The girls of course asked for a bright pink stool – because duh, pink and unicorns and princesses – and I just couldn’t say know
And because I used the removable wallpaper, I can switch up the paper as often as I want – now, just a quick warning: since you are using wallpaper, you probably don’t want to be using these stools in a room where they will get wet a lot like a bathroom. Other rooms in your home are game! Here is how I made them:
What you need
- Stool. I used the IKEA Bekvam stool – $14.99 and it’s perfect for toddlers or to use as a side table.
- Wallpaper. I used leftovers of the super pretty Spoonflower removable wallpapers I used in our home and for this project, but you could use regular paper or even contact paper if you wish. PS: I used these 4 papers from Spoonflower: purple pinwheels, farmer’s market, triangle chips, and yellow coral.
- Paint
- Transfer paper
- Crayon
- Scissors
- Glue as needed
- Varnish if you want to protect it better
What you do
- Paint you stool – you can paint and then assemble your stool, or just paint it if you already have a stool put together. I used regular paint on the white sool, and spray paint on the others. Both work great – spray paint just dries faster and I like the finish of it.
- Take your transfer paper, place it on top of the stool, and trace the two different steps on it using the crayon. Cut these out.
- Place the transfer paper cutouts onto your wallpaper, retrace the outlines, and cut.
- Make sure the steps of your stool are very clean (no dust etc that can get stuck), then glue your wallpaper cutouts to each step – make sure no air bubble gets trapped. FIY, I used the wallpaper’s glue as it was easiest and I can remove the wallpaper later if I want to change up my stool, but you could also use more durable/stronger glue if you wish. Et voila, you’re done!
PS: if you want to protect it better, apply a coat of clear varnish on the paint. I am always bad at doing that
Disclaimer: Spoonflower partnered with me for the Giant stickers post and provided me with a few rolls of wallpaper – leftover wallpaper from that project were used to make this new project. I received no compensation. All ideas and thoughts in this post are my own. All pictures by This Little Street.
