Faux Fireplace Mantle with Hidden Storage Cabinets

Faux Fireplace Mantle with Hidden Storage Cabinets

Hello there!

So I've had this idea for quite a while to build a media console for the Momplex for Mom-who-likes-to-sew.

My mother-in-law loves Christmas. She loves giving gifts. She loves the grandchildren coming over to discover their gifts and even orchestrates a special appearance by Santa on Christmas Eve, delivering each child a hand picked gift.

But she has no where to hang stockings. We did not put fireplaces in the Momplex units.

So I thought about building her a faux fireplace, like this one or this one.

But I wanted this piece to be able to work year round, and the only place for this faux fireplace to go would be the only place to put the TV. So I decided to design a new faux fireplace mantle - but this time, conceal behind doors lots of storage for controllers and DVDs, with the TV on top. (For those of you asking, my mother-in-law isn't a big TV person so the high height of the TV is not an issue for her).

I think it turned out nice!

The best part is it's actually a pretty simple build. You just build the main frame with 1x12s (or plywood strips or MDF strips if you live in a humid climate) and then the front doors are also 1x12s hinged on. Then just add moulding to top and bottom and that's it!

I put together a video of all the steps, please check it out -

I built this project for RyobiNATION. You can download the plans and all the steps from RyobiNATION here for free.

Please share your project when you are done!

Please read through the entire plan and all comments before beginning this project. It is also advisable to review the Getting Started Section. Take all necessary precautions to build safely and smartly. Work on a clean level surface, free of imperfections or debris. Always use straight boards. Check for square after each step. Always predrill holes before attaching with screws. Use glue with finish nails for a stronger hold. Wipe excess glue off bare wood for stained projects, as dried glue will not take stain. Be safe, have fun, and ask for help if you need it. Good luck!

Fill all holes with wood filler and let dry. Apply additional coats of wood filler as needed. When wood filler is completely dry, sand the project in the direction of the wood grain with 120 grit sandpaper. Vacuum sanded project to remove sanding residue. Remove all sanding residue on work surfaces as well. Wipe project clean with damp cloth. It is always recommended to apply a test coat on a hidden area or scrap piece to ensure color evenness and adhesion. Use primer or wood conditioner as needed.
