Letter Coatrack DIY

Letter Coatrack DIY

This coatrack is inspired by Heath Nash’s coatracks. They don’t make them anymore so I thought it would be fun to make a simple version ourselves so we could make it say what ever we wanted. We made one that said “hello hello” but you could customize it to spell a name or whatever you wanted. This would make a great gift and the supplies to make it are very inexpensive. It does take about a day of crafting but if you spread that out over a few days it would just take a few evenings. (See some other Gifts to Make right here.)

Materials Needed: Wire Cutters, Wire Pliars, Heavy Metal Wire (it should be difficult to bend) , Coated Telephone Wire, Tape, Fishing Wire.

Step 1: Decide what you are going to say and spell out the letters in one continuous piece of heavy wire. You’ll need to use the pliars to bend the wire into place. If you use dotted ‘i’s’ and punctuation its a little trickier.

Step 2: Wrap the letters tightly in colored telephone wire.

Step 3: Decide how long your coat rack is going to be compared with your letters. And decide how many hooks it will have and how many loops for hanging. Then make the rack using one continuous piece of heavy wire (the wire gets doubled up as the coatrack structure gets made.) Once the coatrack structure is in place wrap it in colored wire so that everything is held together.

Step 4: To attach the letters to the coatrack begin by wrapping the wire from the letters to the wire on one of the coat hooks. Next, take fishing wire and attach the letters as they fall across the coat hooks. Finally, attach the end of the word with the wire at the last coat hook. And you’re done!
